Today in 1940 the first Bombe code breaking machine was installed in Hut 1 at Bletchley Park. It was named 'Victory'. It had been designed by Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman to try to compute the settings of the Enigma machine, the German encryption device thought by the Nazi leadership to be unbreakable. With the help of the bombe and some captured assets the first major steps were taken to cracking the Enigma. This magnificent reconstruction is on display at Bletchley. | History Hit
