On March 23, 2005, a catastrophic series of explosions rocked the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas. During the startup of an isomerization unit, a raffinate splitter tower was overfilled with liquid hydrocarbons. Because the unit lacked a flare system, the excess pressure forced a geyser of flammable liquid out of an atmospheric vent stack, forming a massive vapor cloud at ground level.
