As extreme cold weather grips large sections of the United States, people still need to work and live their lives. CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen has guidance.
Meteorologists say that water rapidly freezing in the soil amid bitterly cold temperatures can make a startling noise and even cause small vibrations.
The weather service said people should limit their time outside, dress in loose layers, and cover all exposed skin. Additionally, people should eat hot food and drink warm drinks, but should avoid caffeine and alcohol. During extreme cold, wear multiple layers, boots, gloves, a warm hat and a face covering.
The Salvation Army will open a cold weather shelter at its Manatee County location, 1204 14th St. W., Bradenton, with check-in beginning at 6 p.m. Under One Roof, located at 407 57th Ave E., Bradenton, will open early to provide shelter for women in need during the cold weather.
A cold weather advisory remains in effect for all of central Pennsylvania through Wednesday morning as dangerous wind chills between 10 and 15 degrees below zero continue overnight. Light snow and flurries are expected this evening across northern and western regions, with accumulations up to one inch possible in higher elevations.

Cold weather advisories issued for all of Pa.; wind chills to hit 25 below zero in some areas
It’s cold, and it’s about to get colder. The entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is under a cold weather advisory and several counties in the western part of the state are under an extreme cold warning.
A pattern change is coming for the first part of February. The latest long-range temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has a 50-60% chance of above-average temperatures in SE MN and NE IA. Temperatures will likely warm into the upper 20s and 30s for highs through the first week or so of February.
The National Weather Service released an updated cold weather advisory at 1:27 a.m. on Tuesday in effect until 1 p.m. for Steuben County.
