She was his Lúthien, the immortal heroine who chose mortality for love. This image of Edith dancing in a woodland became a pivotal scene in Tolkien’s mythology, celebrated in The Silmarillion. After her death, Tolkien honored their eternal bond by marking her gravestone with the name Lúthien.
